Amazing time away

What an adventurous and eventful weekend it was for us. Starting with playing stuck in the mud with the car, to being spoiled with the Milkyway above us. Getting to taste a delicious selection of wines, having a very personal interaction with a black and white worm that needed to get off one of us instantly, and seeing the scorpion mama with all her little babies clinging onto her.

A big thank you to everyone who assisted us and a big special thank you to Nelmarie for showing us what Rogge Cloof has to offer.

Beeindruckender Ort, einmalige Gastfreundschaft / Impressive place, unique hospitality

It already started with a very warm welcome and we felt very welcome. The people who work here and take care of the guests are extremely warm and you have the feeling that it is very honest. The bungalows, one of which we rented, are within walking distance of the main building. These are very modern and practically furnished. Since they are powered by solar power, the range of electronics is limited. So no heated blankets either, which we would have liked to have used on those nights. But the small wood stove helps here. In addition to the excellent cuisine, they grow their own wine. This should definitely be tried. We felt that the hardships these vines go through in this climate and altitude are reflected in the wine. All in all a great place with very attentive service and lots of friendliness.

It stole my heart

This place is a gem of a place located in the Karoo and I truly wish that more people should visit. We were allowed to check in early and the welcome we received was so heartwarming with friendly smiles and jokes upon arrival. We stayed at The Stables which is so well designed and decorated. It has everything you need for your stay. We were given hand soap, shampoo , conditioner, a little welcome note. It has Large sliding doors overlooking the dam where springboks come and drink water. This place runs on solar power so no tv or hairdryers etc but the natural beauty surrounding you, you definitely won’t be missing the tv. I highly recommend this place to all.

WHAT A SURPRIZE...WHAT A GEM IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!! We will definitely be back for more. The food is awesome!!! The Cabins are beautiful with amazing views through the huge windows of the grazing springbuck. The Fossil tour was most informative and the personal service we received from the staff is commendable. We Loved it!!!! We will be back to come and climb the volcano!!!

Wow! .....James ......has already decided that Rogge Cloof is his favourite destination so far (and we have been to some truly spectacular places!). ......

As a foodie family we really want to compliment your chefs, the food was spectacular and they went out of their way to make us feel spoiled. I fell in love with the greenhouse too, it is one of the best and most successful I’ve seen!

We sadly didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to Andre who was really kind to include my boys in the cheetah surgery and was always available to provide ideas for walks and activities for my active family. He is truly a gem.

When we drove away yesterday, my usually quiet James was so animated about the beauty of the area and couldn’t stop talking about how he is a “farm boy at heart”.

We are so glad to have found this treasure! We just wish it wasn’t so far away from us.

"Hidden in the Nowhere"

Hidden in the vastness of the Great Karoo, a beautifully landscaped holiday village with friendly service and great food. We stayed in the Leopard Suite and once again caught two of the colder nights (3 degrees) in December. The suite is spacious and solar powered. So there is no hair dryer and no electric blankets. The fireplace in the room provides the necessary warmth and the large, comfortable warm bed also helped. The set menu in the evening was superbly cooked and the resort's own wine was spicy and worked wonderfully. It is amazing how wine can grow and taste at such altitude and harsh conditions. We stayed there because we had a look at the SALT telescope, but the small and fine stargazing tour in the resort in the evening was much nicer and more impressive. So if you want to see the moon, Saturn and Venus up close, as well as blue and yellow stars and their difference, you should definitely spend the evening like this. We were completely satisfied and were the only "foreign" tourists far and wide due to the Corona situation ....

Magical!

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Rogge Cloof. It is a very special place – the quietness and feeling of remoteness one gets in the Karoo may not be for everyone but we certainly loved it. The game & fossil drive was very interesting and makes you appreciate all the little things that are easily overlooked. The accommodation is lovely and the enthusiastic and friendly staff made our stay extra special. And of course the night sky and stargazing is fantastic and a real treat for any astronomy enthusiasts.

Quick weekend break

We recently spent a weekend at Rogge Cloof. It was a great experience, even though the weather was bad, with a howling icy wind. We stayed in the Cedar cottage, where we kept the fire burning against the cold. It was a perfect fit for my wife and I with our 5 year old. We did a game drive with Cara, and I have to commend her on her ability to keep my son interested. The food was very nice, the people were great, and we will surely come again. Oh, and you have to try, and buy, the wine!

The perfect little getaway

Rogge Cloof is the perfect place to recharge a bit. Will strongly recommend it to outdoorsy people, with an appreciation for nature. Such friendly staff, and wonderful food, especially for meat lovers.

It has free WIFI, but no other cellphone signal, which is not necessarily a bad thing if you want to unwind.

Cottages are clean, with everything one will need. Perfect for summer and winter, as it has a pool, and various hiking routes.

We will definitely be back for a hike to Salpeterkop.

Wonderful week end in Nature!
My husband spoiled me on my 65 birthday with a week end at Rogge Cloof and from our welcome on the farm to our last going away was a wonderful experience, starting with friendly, welcoming staff - nothing was to much trouble to make us happy...we enjoyed the walks and the veld flowers was absolutely amazing. The Cedar House was great with indoor fire place, comfortable beds and everything that you would need on a week end away. The cleaning staff was friendly and efficient and sorted us out with enough fire wood for the indoor fire place... we would definitely go again!

Great Stay at Rogge Cloof
We had high expectations and they were all met. The staff were warm, friendly, efficient and helpful. Manager Andre runs a slick operation. Food was good and the Orion suites were spacious, comfortable, clean and blissfully quiet. There was a wood burning heater for cold nights. Wi-Fi but no mobile reception. Off grid but solar power for small devices such as cameras and mobile phones. Not much to do other than stargazing, cycling, walking, birding and some game viewing. It's a great get away from hectic city life. We recommend it.

Stars and serenity in the Karoo
Our road trip included Sutherland to view the stars. Rogge Cloof is a pleasant surprise and for the first time I really appreciated the Karoo. The Eco Village is a beautiful place, blending in with nature. Attention to detail in the interior decorating of the secluded accommodation is outstanding and the fireplace a blessing. Fabulous linen and bedding. All the meals were beautifully presented and delicious. We loved every moment of our stay at Rogge Cloof. Involved and informed management and staff. Just keep in mind that the travel time from the main road to the Eco Village is approximately 30 minutes on a dirt road.

I wish I could give more than 5 stars. Rogge Cloof is such a magical place. André and his team go far beyond the requirements of regular accommodation. I've never experienced hospitality that's so authentic. It's a great venue for star gazing, just far out of town to be on your own and surrounded by springbok and other wildlife. The Eco Village is designed to show you what comforts are possible when it comes living off of the grid. We hope to make this an annual trip. Make sure you have a car that can take a dirt road and come with sense of adventure. What a privilege to have spent time in this magical corner of our world with such fantastic people.

Good day everyone,

This is just a short note to thank you for your exceptional service.
I have been staying at Roggecloof for the past +_ 18 Months for work related traveling.

First and most important is the friendliness, helpfulness and professional treatment received from all the staff. From house keeping up to senior management.

The accommodation facilities are first class, neat, clean and well managed.

Small little things that management has done was to get rid of the shower curtain and replace it with a shower door in Cedar cottage. It looks soooooo much more professional………..

The major operations are impressive as well with all the changes, new buildings, carports, swimming pool area, rebuilding of screen walls, upgrading the dining room area etc.

The general maintenance is managed very well from road maintenance up to general maintenance inside and outside all cottages.

Well done to all the staff and management team of Rogge Cloof, it is a real pleasure to stay here, and it feels like a second home.

Thanks to the Rogge Cloof team that always supplies me with an additional work table in my cottage for my laptop and additional electrical extension cords. I don’t even have to ask for it, it is always just there.

Kind regards

An incredible stay!
We absolutely loved our stay at Rogge Cloof and everything this beautiful eco-reserve represents. We were welcomed by Cara, one of the guides who also checked us in & saw to our needs whilst staying at Rogge Cloof for 2 nights. This beautiful reserve catered to our special meal requirements and also introduced us to game cuisine. The food was good & hearty and we savored the succulent Karoo cuisine as well as enjoyed the good wine of Rogge Cloof. We even bought some wine for home. No words can properly describe the night sky. It was magical, so bright & beautiful. We can understand why Rogge Cloof is called “ spaceport karoo”. We loved the gorgeous night sky at Rogge Cloof and our time by the outside fireplace just watching the incredible night sky and enjoying our best stargazing experience. We also explored the reserve cycling and did an interesting excursion with Cara learning about fossils & the Karoo plants & a bit about the reserve and its animals. Cara even indulged our special request to see the injured cheetah, Mona. All in all an amazing stay and experience & we would love to return in winter to experience the snow.

New moon under the stars

I’ve been to a nature reserve, I’ve been to a game reserve, I’ve even been to an aquarium, this was my first time even hearing of a ‘Dark Sky Reserve’.

That is exactly what Rogge Cloof is, a dark sky reserve. Think about it, they are literally preserving the darkness by controlling the artificial light pollution that prevents us from truly seeing the stars as they are.

Being close to Sutherland and spanning an entire 18 000 hectares, with minimal structures emitting artificial light it gets crazy dark and is super close to the curvature of the earth which makes it the perfect location for admiring the stars.

This place has a magical energy and after only 2 days of being there we left in awe of nature.

Being a family run establishment adds to the experience, expect a warm welcome as if you are long lost family returning home to the clan.

We stayed in the Oryx House which has all the creature comforts of home and a large wrap around balcony with a fire pit.

Can’t wait to visit again.

Heaven on Earth
We spent 2 nights at this wonderful resort. This eco lodge is very well maintained, has very nice people and excellent service. Breakfast and dinner were of outstanding quality. We went on a tour into their reserve (18.000 ha) to search - and find - the cheetahs who have been re-wilded on their land. Sam, an extremely passionate guide brought us within a few meters to "Mona" who was hiding under a bush. At a another place, hiding below rocks, we found two twin cheetah boys. The evenings we spend on the terrace at our bungalow and looked at the springboks grazing in front of us and enjoyed the spectacular starry sky. Definitely a place to come back to.

A Christmas to Remember
We had a short stay at Roggecloof from 24 to 27 December 2020, but it felt like we had been on a two week holiday. We arrived tired, in desperate need of some time-out and we left, feeling like we have returned from a faraway planet.

We were welcomed like royalty by the staff at Roggecloof (masked and sanitised according to protocol) and it immediately felt like we had arrived to visit family. The staff were exceptional throughout our stay, no matter whether we enjoyed the delicious food at the restaurant, the great wine, the gorgeous setting, the cheetah game drive or an unusual request. They went above and beyond. Andrè, Jacqui, Cara, Nelmari and the team made it a super special stay.

Roggecloof impressed us with a spacious and cosy unit, outfitted with everything we might need, right down to a corkscrew and more. Our bed was comfortable and the white bedding and towels put my mind at ease. The two large sofas are perfectly comfortable to curl up with a good book.

It was simply delicious to wake up in the morning, the wind whistling across the valley, the sky clear and carefree, sipping coffee and eating biscuits, while the Karoo awoke from its bedazzled slumber.

Bedazzled, is an appropriate description of the night sky at Roggecloof. Millions of heavenly bodies light up this spectacular space every night. Stargazing is one of the main attractions in Sutherland and I would recommend you stay longer, just to experience the excitement of seeing planets, stars, nebulas and constellations.

It was our first time visiting Roggecloof, but it will certainly not be our last.

Rogge Cloof was the perfect spot for our Trip to Sutherland. As we were there to see the stars, Rogge Cloof was great as we could keep entertained on the reserve during the day with game drives, bike rides, etc, and at night it’s close enough to town that a trip to the town/observatory is not a hassle. Not to mention that the reserve is the perfect place to see the night sky due to its remote location! The service was amazing. Any questions or issues were answered/ dealt with quickly and well. When going here, you must bear in mind that it runs on Solar Power, and so you can’t expect anything high tech. But this is part of the experience. (Although saying that, the complementary WiFi was faster and more reliable than my WiFi at home). We had a wonderful time here and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to go to Sutherland.

Hi 👋 everybody .... - wow, we got back on Sunday evening, or from our weekend away... - the Peanuts prize from the quiz evening - we went to a ‘gem’ in the Karoo.... - Rogge Cloof (www.roggecloof.com) just outside Sutherland, where they not only offer awesome accommodation with very friendly and helpful staff, but also lots of ‘extra’ activities.... - a fossil field with fossils dating back as far as 250 million years ago; game drives with the chance of seeing cheetahs, Springbok, Eland and many other species of wild life and bird life; the use of ‘fat bikes’ for the energetic and a swimming pool for the not-so energetic.... - the night skies are indescribably beautiful and you feel like you could almost touch the stars... the peace and quiet and openness of it all is what has inspired numerous books and poems. Not only is Rogge Cloof worth a visit (or two) but it is also close enough to visit SALT...( South African Large Telescope) at the South African Asronomical Observatory AND the Sutherland Planetarium. The team had a great time....

Went for the stars and got so much more

We had a 2 night stay at Rogge Cloof as part of a post lock down road trip from Johannesburg through the Karoo.

This really is a very special place. The rooms are lovely and modern with a big warm fire place and ample wood, the farm is huge and has got more animals than we ever expected.

The people however are what make this place so special. Andre and Corlia from the time of booking were superstars and they took care of us like we were old friends. A special treat was when the young and passionate rangers Sam and Franco introduced us to the cheetah twins. The chef made sure we were well fed with his delicious food.

We never got stars, we got beautiful snow and were richer for the kind and lovely people who are Rogge Cloof.

Fabulous

Like a good red wine this establishment grew on us the longer we stayed. After an initial not so good first impression (in fairness though due to the writer being unnecessarily grumpy but also due to us arriving through the back entrance amidst building works on the go) Rogge Cloof turned into a gem of a place to spend an extremely chilly long weekend. Andre and his entire team were fabulous hosts and the passion portrayed by Sam and her caring for the cheetahs left a lasting impression on my wife and I. The food was plentiful and of a high standard and the chalet we stayed in was luxurious and perfect with a roaring fire which we kept going at the foot of the bed for the entire weekend. We will be back and we cannot highly recommend enough this establishment in the middle of no-where but well worth the drive from wherever you may originate from, in our case Paarl, Western Cape. A stunning drive which show cases why the Western Cape is miles ahead of the rest of the country with great roads and beautiful scenery, although admittedly the 80 or so km's into the Northern Cape was equally stunning.

Excellent
We visited Rogge Cloof guest farm/cheetah reserve as a last minute activity after a stay in Matjiesfontein, and before we drove back to Cape Town.
We spent a wonderful and few hours here - and were so lucky to see a cheetah extremely close up, after tracking it for a couple of hours. What a treat! Andre and his team could not have looked after us better. They are all obviously so
passionate about the work they do here in Sutherland at this guest farm.
Rogge Cloof is also planting vines - and is one of the highest and coldest vineyards in SA.
Other things to do here/nearby include star gazing and if you have an interest in geology, a visit to the volcano.
Next time we will spend a night or two at the guest farm - there was too much for us to do in a few hours.

We would like to thank you for your kindness and hospitality with arranging the trip around Rogge Cloof. What a wonderful experience it was for all of us, and something we would not have known about if we had not met you at The Lord Milner. None of us have seen cheetahs so close up before. You all obviously have a deep affection and respect for these animals, it was so lovely to see.

Our time spent with you, Corlia and colleagues was an added bonus for our 40th celebration weekend, and we thank you so much for giving up your time to host us. And the wine was the icing on the cake ..... we enjoyed a bottle or two with our friends before they returned to the UK on Saturday.

What an experience.

My wife and I stayed at Rogge Cloof on our honeymoon in October 2019. We were received by the friendliest people on our whole trip of 4500 km across South Africa.

When the staff found out that we were on our honeymoon, they gave us some of their incredible wine (WOW) and arranged that Sam (a very experienced field guide) take us out to see the whole reserve including one of their famous Cheetahs. Sam told us about the history of the reserve, all the historic landmarks and a boatload of cool facts about the area. It was a cold morning so we were offered warm coffee and rusks.

The entire experience is something that we will never forget. we will be back very soon and definitely take our friends and family along.

Thank you for your hospitality, top-class accommodation and working so hard to look after our beautiful country.

Best long weekend away
We stayed at Rogge Cloof for the long weekend in Aug for my dad's 60th birthday and were treated to the best time. My dad especially loved the Sutherland stars, the visit to SALT, and our outing to the fossil field. Thanks so so much to Andre for treating us to a wonderful day out, and for the delicious wines. We all had the best time and cannot wait to return. We will be sure to do so in summer when the water in the pipes is unlikely to freeze ;-) Despite one day of freezing cold, our house was perfectly warm and comfy, and the beds are really top-notch. My family and I were really impressed by the level of service we received from everyone at Rogge Cloof. Our game driver, André, aka Oom Piet, was really entertaining and tried his best to prevent us from freezing on the drive. Anna-Marie was very welcoming and made us feel right at home when we arrived and when we left. The accommodation was perfect, thanks to the fireplaces that we kept burning from the time we arrive till the time we departed. I really need to get me one of those fire places! Karoo Space Retreat
The last few years travelling to Sutherland I have always seen the big blue wall of Rogge Cloof just as you come over the pass. So recently decided to Google and see what the Space Port is all about. And decided to book a weekend, and I was not disappointed. Corlia and Andre welcome you as if you are royalty. The 11 km drive from the reception to the village is amazing, and please take your time like I did. The cottage I stayed in lacked nothing. It was cosy and spacious. I had a visit from a mongoose who came to see if I had any left overs from the braai. I will be back in summer time, as I cannot think of a better venue to sit outside with a fire on warm summers evening below a blanket of stars. As there is no better place to do so ...

Where to start with Rogge Cloof? Well the drive there from Matjiesfontein takes about an hour along a road that you will see almost no other cars.
Once on the compound there is a drive of a couple of km to get to the reception and then a further 11km drive to the village where all of the cottages are located. The drive is along a dirt track so you have to take it fairly slowly, however this means that you get more of a chance to see all of the wildlife roaming though the farm.
We stayed in the Wolskuur cottage which was spacious and comfortable. The WiFi connection was strong and there was no TV in the room.
Outside there is a firepit that we made good use of as we had bought provisions in Sutherland for a Braai, once we had eaten we built the fire up again and watched the stars by the warmth of the fire. The sky is so dark in the Karoo that you can easily see the constellations and the milky way.
The following morning we had booked Cheetah tracking, Andre advised that this could take anything between 3-4 hours, but we found Calvin in well under an hour and were guided to within 10 metres of him. Because we found him so quickly we were taken as a bonus to the fossil field where you can see fossilised dinosaur bones just laying on the floor (don't pick them up though). On the drive to the fossil field Andre was very engaging in showing us and talking to us about the flora and fauna in the reserve along with the geological changes.
The cooked breakfasts are filling and cooked to order, although do remember that if you say that you'll have a 9am breakfast you will need to leave the village about 20 minutes beforehand for the drive.
I actually cannot fault anything with our stay and will return as we didn't have a chance to hike on the extinct volcano within the farm.
They also make wine, and we have brought a bottle back to the UK so that we can remember our wonderful stay.

What's not to like?

Wanting to get away from people, cities, highways, and distractions, we were on the road to Rogge Cloof within 24 hours of a phone call. All my questions were answered promptly so that I could prepare, pack, and travel efficiently. My two non-negotiables were pet-friendly and WiFi. What is important is that they use solar power, so that you can leave your power-hungry appliances at home. You can plug in a laptop and charge your phones. Cooking is on a gas hob and oven, and an outside braai. In winter the wood-burning stove will keep the room cosy. Hot water is plentiful from the gas geyser. The borehole water is sweet. The cottage is smart and clean and fully supplied for self-catering. We chose an out-of-season weekend getaway, and were happy to be alone in the rocky Karoo veld, with the stars above. Absolutely top value for money. André and Corlia are the perfect hosts. We want to be here in spring!

Great Place To Escape The City

I spent the long weekend here with my family, it’s a beautiful game reserve with the wild life right outside your door step. The view of the stars at night is breathtaking, if you have a telescope or good camera, be sure to bring it along.
The staff are unbelievably friendly and helpful, it’s clear that they love what they do.
Be sure to take the Game Reserve Drive and check out the Fossil Field (where you can find fossils from millions of years ago!!)
Andre and Inge are two stand out members of staff - GIVE THEM A RAISE!

The ongoing materialisation of the vision is awe-inspiring and simply being at Rogge Cloof is humbling. We can't wait to be back.

'A true gem!'

Rogge Cloof is an exceptional place!

We were only able to stay one night, unfortunately. However, the reception we received by André was outstanding. Every staff member we met, had introduced themselves by name, and gave us so much information about the farm and the sustainability that they promote on the farm.

Gemini Pollux was the name of our cottage. A beautiful, quaint and clean home for the evening. We were in awe from the moment we entered the farm. Just when we thought we had seen it all, from the exceptional welcoming, the beautiful cottage, the alluring wildlife and the captivating landscapes; the sunset began to show its colours. The stars came out and lit up the sky for miles to see. With a fire flickering to keep us warm, the stars put on a show that cannot be described.

Upon departing our lovely cottage, we headed for the breakfast cottage, situated in a little valley. Only to be welcomed by friendly staff, whom carried us on their hands like royalty. Their friendliness and willingness to serve us was absolutely astounding. We can truly say that we were sad to leave. However, their exceptional wines which we purchased will bring back remembrance of a fantastic place with exceptional people and beautiful scenery. It was an honor to have met the team of Rogge Cloof.

This is a place that will definitely see us again!

'A special place'

From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, Corlia and Andre were welcoming and attentive. The accommodation was well appointed and comfortable. The attention to sustainability was commendable.

The sheer wide open space of the estate was awe inspiring and the plentiful game lovely to see. It even has its own volcano. A few days before we arrived the rains had exposed what I could only describe as a field of dinosaur bones which Andre and Corlia were happy to show us. I believe there are some interesting plans for this fantastic find.

Soon after we departed my son asked me when we would be back. Rogge Cloof is a real eye opener for adults and kids alike.

Thanks for everything guys

Ongelooflik met sneeu daarby. Beste twee dae!

What a wonderful experience we had on the game drive.

The warm welcome when we arrived was so special.

Inge, aka Sarah, has a wealth of knowledge of not only the farm but also the surrounding areas.

Although cold we were amazed at how the antelope roam the area so freely.

Coming back to reception after the drive was a welcome sight after the winds had picked up just a few kilometres after we left the village.

The food, first time I ate and enjoyed skilpadjies, the lamb chops was excellent and the Malva pudding was great. Shirley and Aaron enjoyed the Ox Tail. This all thanks to Marzanne and Tegan.

It was also nice meeting Andre and his story of how Facebook started.

We will be back to do the Salpeterkop drive.

Onverwagse Wonderlikheid!

Dit voel eerder asof jy by goeie vriende gaan kuier.

Wow... we could not have asked for a better place to stay to experience the Upper Veld in the Karoo. The house was perfect. Very clean, all the amenities we could have asked for if we wanted to cook, and perfectly situated out on the high desert plain so we could view the stars and watch the natural habitat. We had a three bedroom, 3.5 bath house that sleeps 6 adults comfortably. Very large porch overhang around three sides of the house for covered viewing. The staff… we can’t say enough about how helpful they were on our visit. Andre, Corlia, and Riana were all perfect hosts. Andre’s guided tour up Salpeterkop was one of the highlights of this trip to South Africa. The morning breakfast in the lodge is to die for! Corlia and Riana gave us great advise on places to eat in Sutherland at night. You can visit without an SUV and they will take you into the park… but I would highly recommend coming with an SUV so you can drive on the reserve. Game drives available if you want. Also… fat wheel mountain bikes available to rent.

We had the pleasure to be among the first guests at one of the beautiful houses -Waenhuis this past weekend. Very comfortable and spacious accommodation. The highlight would have to be the location! Never before have we seen so many stars. During the day we sighted many varieties of buck and interesting landscapes from one of the safari vehicles in a guided tour after which we had a delicious meal at the restaurant. Would definitely recommend Rogge Cloof and will definitely be back, next time with a telescope. Thank you team! Well done.
